Hub Heroes

Meet some of the remarkable makers, creators, and innovators driving our growing movement toward a more sustainable, circular future. Connected through our pop-up Makers Market at the Hub 4 Circularity Brighton, they bring passion, ingenuity and purpose to everything they do, turning waste into wonder and ideas into action. Their stories show how a meanwhile space can become a catalyst for connection, where ideas are exchanged organically, collaboration flourishes and positive change begins locally, with lasting impact.

At PHASES, we turn long-empty buildings into homes full of life and opportunity, while creating hands-on training opportunities for people with lived experience of homelessness. Many empty buildings have beautiful original features which we try to retain where practical. Guided by experts, our trainees gain the specialist knowledge and craft skills to help restore these decorative elements. As these are sought-after crafts, this enhances their skillsets and helps us to honour the traditional skills of the past.

Our short building skills training courses offer more than just practical training: they provide a vital first step back into learning for people who’ve faced some of life’s toughest challenges. Often labelled ‘hard to reach’, our courses help people with experience of homelessness, veterans with PTSD, people with mental health struggles, or the socially excluded. Led by our award-winning educator, these small, hands-on sessions help participants gain practical construction skills and begin rebuilding confidence, purpose and direction in their own lives

At PHASES, we’re committed to sustainability, innovation and social impact and we know how important it is to share knowledge, research and new ideas across the sector. From low-carbon, modular construction methods to applying whole-of-life design thinking, we’re interested in building projects that balance environmental responsibility with human-centred design. Our aim is to ensure that the homes we create today are adaptable, inclusive and ready to meet the needs of tomorrow,  for people of all ages and abilities.
